A Transparent Guide to the Bespoke Journey

At Mark James Cabinet Makers, we believe truly bespoke furniture begins with a conversation. Whether you're planning a kitchen, a boot room, or a full home interior, our process is designed to be clear, collaborative, and enjoyable from first contact to final fit.
We know some visitors want a quick sense of what working with us involves, while others prefer to explore each step in detail. Below, you'll find both.

The Process In More Detail
Step 1 – Once we have heard from you.
We’ll send you our latest Inspiration Brochure and Pricing Guide giving you a glimpse into our style, craftsmanship, and past work. We’ll also invite you to visit us at our workshop in Whitchurch, Shropshire the best place to begin any bespoke journey.

Step 2 – Workshop Visit
We’ll meet in person for a relaxed, no-pressure chat. You’ll see examples of our work, view projects in progress, and explore materials and finishes in a hands-on setting.
It’s also a chance for us to understand your space, priorities, and design preferences. You don’t need to bring anything specific, just your ideas, photos, or even a rough sketch if you like.
If it feels like a good fit for both of us, we’ll follow up with a tailored Project Vision designed to help you visualise what’s possible.
Step 3 – Your tailored ‘Project Vision’
This isn’t just a pretty picture, it’s a design tool. We’ll create a carefully shaped Project Vision designed around your room layout, style preferences, and the conversations we’ve shared.
It helps clarify the direction and spark further ideas. At this stage, we’ll also be able to give you an idea of costing.

Step 4 – Bespoke Design Service (£250) Ex. Vat
If the Project Vision supports our work together, the next step is to commission our Bespoke Design Service. This is where we begin the technical work:
  • A full home visit for precise measurements
  • Scale layout drawings and cabinetry configuration
  • Concept renders and room visuals
  • Internal planning and specification development
The £250 design fee is deducted from your booking deposit if you proceed. If not, it simply reflects the time, care, and technical detail involved at this stage.

Step 5 – Concept Designs
From your home visit the design will start to take shape.
You’ll receive your first full layout and visual presentation — what we call Inspiration Concept 0001, a concept built around everything we’ve discussed so far.
You’ll have the opportunity to review, refine, and adjust. Most clients find that 2–3 rounds are enough to land on the perfect version.
Step 6 – Final Specification & Quotation
Once you’re happy with the design, we’ll prepare your final specification and detailed quotation.
If everything feels right and you’d like to place an order for your design, we’ll issue your booking deposit invoice, and your project will be scheduled into our workshop calendar.

Step 7 – Pre-Production Home Visit
Before we begin cutting any components, we’ll return for a final home visit. This ensures that every measurement is double-checked, including any changes to flooring, wall finishes, plumbing, or electrics. This step ensures we avoid costly mistakes and that your furniture fits perfectly first time.

Let’s Begin the Conversation
If you’re ready to explore what’s possible or simply want to learn more, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
Every project starts with a conversation… and a good cup of coffee.
