February Workshop Weekly

Concept Design through to Reality
Tongue & Grooved back in a contrasting colour to the panelled ends, top and base cabinets. Oak solid lipped top with matching shelving. The handles are rubbed bronze from an exclusive collection to compliment these traditional Shaker Alcove Units. Left hand cabinet will have 8mm toughened glass shelving and two spot lights to set off our clients glassware.

The Process .....
We join the process here after all the components for the cabinets have been cut and the interiors have had two coats of lacquer applied.  We wait a couple of days to allow the lacquer to harden and the next stage is to join the cabinets together.  A solid Beech frame is made, sanded and attached to the cabinet.  We make our frames out of solid beech frame to give the cabinet extra rigidity. This frame will withstand knocks from the most enthusiastic of  Dyson owners. Now all the Cabinets are constructed we can measure all the apertures to get an exact measurement for the Shaker Doors.  The doors are having a slight variation on the Shaker Style and for these pieces of furniture we will be adding an Ogee moulding which will give a more 3D appearance to the door.  It works particularly well with darker colou
rs.
Solid Beech Frame waiting to be joined to the Base Cabinet components behind.
Base Cabinet constructed then off to the paint room.
First undercoat has been applied to the frame.
The two base cabinets have now had their first top coat applied in F&B Worstead
The R/H side top cabinet has also had it's first top coat of F&B Pavilion Gray
And now onto the door manufacture. Here are all of the upright styles for the Shaker Doors that have been precision cut to 80mm.
Door rails and centre rails kept separate until all the tennon joints have been cut to both ends of each rail.
Here is a close up of the Ogee moulding. The groove below will hold the fielded door panel in place.
A set of doors & end panels sanded flat and in the background five doors drying in the clamps.
Each door is fitted into it's frame aperture and will finish with an even 2mm gap all round the door.
First of five coats on the Doors, End Panels, Skirting and Cornice.
After the undercoat has been applied and left to dry thoroughly the door is sanded flat. Notice the difference in colour.
To minimise the brush strokes in the final top coat each component is hand sanded with a soft pad.
All the dust needs to be removed and a Dyson comes in handy for this. These doors are now ready for their first top coat.
Dresser Tops now cut and solid lipped. Drying after second coat of lacquer. Last coat to be applied after de nibbing.
Shelves drying on the racks with first top coated painted components.
All shelves solid lipped and lacquered awaiting final buff.
All the end panels, skirt, cornice and shelves have been wrapped ready for fitting day. I quickly took this pic before all the doors disappeared too!!
